Tree planting may look like an easy venture, however from our experience we know it is crucial to manage a range of factors to ensure your woodland establishes successfully.
As autumn closes in we are fast approaching the start of the planting period, generally running from mid-November through to March.
Suppliers
A poor supplier is the most common cause of tree fatality and at Northumberland Country Services we are dedicated to advising and recommending trusted suppliers to our clients. Failure in early establishment can be costly with further expenditure required to replant replacements.
Planting
Planting trees as bare-root transplants during the winter months is the cheapest form of supply. It is therefore vital to have planned the planting window as nurseries supply trees straight from their root bed and to avoid tree fatality these should be planted as soon after delivery as possible. If left too long tree roots are prone to drying out (desiccation) or in some instance rot.
Weather conditions must be right and appropriate tree shelters and canes are mandatory to establishing a successful plantation in the first five years.
Aftercare
Management past the early establishment stage should be taken into consideration and this is something Northumberland Country Services are able to assist you with. We are committed to providing a full range of services to ensure your new woodland prospers:
- Watering during the first growing season
- Weeding to combat competing vegetation
- Periodic checking of tree shelters and canes
